The New
York State Probation Officer’s Association (NYSPOA)
is once again beginning our membership
renewal program for 2008 and the executive
board sincerely hopes that the following
information will interest you to join or
renew your membership in the NYSPOA. Members
in good standing of the association are
entitled to the Legal Defense Fund, which
provides legal assistance in the event of a
critical incident. In addition, NYSPOA
members receive copies of our newsletter and
a discounted rate to our annual conference.
2007 was a very successful year for our
association and Probation as a whole. We
strengthened our relationship with other
criminal justice agencies, specifically NYS
Division of Probation and Correctional
Alternatives (DPCA). We worked on expanding
the pool of OSST trainers and watched as the
first Probation Officer focused Instructor
Development Course was held. Additionally,
we participated on the Judicial Task Force
headed by Chief Judge Judith Kaye and also
participated in the Commission on Sentencing
Reform.
2008 has started off in a great way. We have
selected a new Governor and there are many
new members of the State’s Assembly and
Senate. NYSPOA plans to work with the new
administration by providing detailed
information on the role of probation and the
importance of our field to the Criminal
Justice System as well as the citizens of
New York State. For all of the reasons
above, I sincerely hope that you will be
encouraged to be a member of NYSPOA, for
without the support and the dedication of
its members the NYSPOA would not be able to
exist.
As always, the NYSPOA welcomes its members
to send us your comments, or attendance at
one of our board meetings, which we hold
periodically around the state. After
joining, members will receive a new
membership card, a critical incident
information card (Please note, depending on
the time of the year you enroll in the
NYSPOA, it could take 4 to 6 weeks for us to
process your membership form and mail you
these items. However, your date of
membership will be credited to the date your
application is received). Thank you for your
continued support and I hope that you all
remember to be safe out there!
